Los Angeles/California The LA Greek Festival is a much-anticipated staple of the Los Angeles Community for those of Greek decent and those who only wish they were. The area’s signature fall festival lineup mixes the glamour of the world’s cinematic capital with the Hellenic community, culture and cuisine. If you are unable to travel to Greece this year, come home to 1324 South Normandie Avenue, Los Angeles , California 90006 (at Pico Avenue with St. Sophia Cathedral on one side and the worldwide destination Papa Christos on the other) for riveting live Greek music, youth folk dancing and insights in the breathtaking architectural wonder that is St Sophia Cathedral save these dates.
One of the definitions of Hellenism is an admiration of Greek ideas, style and culture. That makes all of us Philhellenes – lovers of all things Greek! All are invited to share their culture, traditions, heritage, faith, food, dance and the fun-loving spirit of Greece. The (how many years) annual Greek Festival will unspool Friday, October 4 – Saturday, October 5 and Sunday, October 6. This 3-day event draws upwards of 30,000 (?) people from throughout the region. Festival hours are ??? Friday from 5:00pm to 11:00pm, Saturday 12:00pm to 11:00pm and on Sunday from 12:00pm to 10:00pm. Admission is $5.00 on Saturday and Sunday and complimentary on Friday.
Live Greek music and traditional folk dancing will be among the entertainment highlights of the weekend. Greek dancing lessons will be offered. Youth dancers dressed in traditional costumes representing various regions of Greece will perform dance sets throughout the weekend.
On the menu this year will be traditional roast lamb, baked chicken, dolmathes, moussaka, pastitsio, spanakopita, tiropita, and Greek salads. Traditional pop-up tavernas will feature the popular gyros, souvlakia (kabobs) and Greek fries and homemade pastries to make you swoon.
These specialty food items are prepared by the parishioners and Greek cooking lessons will be offered during the festival. This year we will publish more of our favorite recipes on our media outlets. The Greek Gift Marketplace offers imported gift items such as authentic jewelry, cookbooks, artisan goods. Enjoy Greek specialty items such as Frappes (iced coffee Greek style) and both American and Greek hot coffee.
Although food and music are crowd-pleasers, they are not the only attractions offered at this festival. Visitors will be able to attend church services and be awe-inspired by the architectural design and beauty of St Sophia’s traditional Orthodox church along with insights of the Orthodox Christian religion, melding history of the faith and culture.
This is the ONLY Greek Festival in the city of Los Angeles, brought to you annually by Saint Sophia Cathedral. Gather among family and friends and make new friends for three days of celebrating Greek and American culture with authentic and fusion Greek food, pastries and beverages, live Greek and international music and dancing. Oh yes, did we mention a chorus of “Opa’s!!” wafting over the sunny California sky’s.
